Why Hard Water Spots Show Up on San Diego Glass
Hard water spots on San Diego windows come from mineral-heavy sprinkler overspray, not rain. Inland communities like Poway, Scripps Ranch, and 4S Ranch get hit hardest because irrigation runs almost year-round. The deposits bake onto the glass in the sun, and a regular squeegee pass just smears them instead of lifting them off.

We see it on almost every inland job. A sprinkler head can run for ten or fifteen minutes at a stretch, throwing a fan pattern across the bottom third of a window, and once that water evaporates in San Diego's dry afternoon air, the calcium and magnesium left behind bakes into the glass within days, not weeks. On a job off Titan Street in Poway last month, a 14-window rear elevation had spotting so bad from a single misaligned sprinkler head that we had to go over three panes twice to break it loose.
Coastal streets don't get this problem the same way. La Jolla and Point Loma glass films over from salt in the air, not sprinklers, and that's a different kind of buildup entirely.

Does deionized water actually get hard water spots off?
Yes, for most residential spotting. Deionized water has nothing dissolved in it, so when it dries on the glass it doesn't leave a new mineral layer behind. That's the whole reason we run our water-fed brushes at around 60 PSI with deionized water on exterior glass instead of a squeegee and tap water.
What it won't do is remove spotting that's been sitting untouched for months without any maintenance. At that point you're looking at a deposit that's etched into the glass surface rather than sitting on top of it, and that's a harder job.
How to Tell If Your Spots Will Come Out
Run a fingernail across a dry spot at a 45-degree angle. If it feels raised and gritty, it's still surface deposit, and deionized water with brush work should clear it. If it feels smooth but the haze is still visible under bright sun, the mineral has likely etched the glass and no amount of washing changes that.
Why We Don't Push a One-Time Fix
A single cleaning takes the current spotting off. It doesn't stop the sprinkler head from firing on the same schedule next week. Homes in 4S Ranch and Del Sur, where irrigation runs on new landscaping almost daily, need a shorter interval between cleanings than an older inland home with mature, established plantings.

Redirecting overspray away from the glass is the actual fix. Cleaning is what handles what's already there.
