Window Screen Cleaning in San Diego

A machine, not a wipe-down

This is the part of our service that customers comment on most, and it is worth explaining why.

The standard approach to screens across the industry is to leave them in place and wipe them, or pull them out and hose them off. Neither works properly. Screen mesh is a grid of thousands of tiny openings, and dirt does not sit on top of it - it bonds around each individual strand and packs into the intersections. Wiping the surface flattens that buildup and pushes it deeper. A hose rinses the loose portion and leaves the rest.

We take every screen off the window and run it through a screen cleaning machine. Running water and bristle brushes work the mesh from both sides at once, scrubbing each strand rather than skating across the surface. It is genuinely different from wiping, and the difference is visible the moment a cleaned screen goes back next to one that has not been done yet.

One of our customers described it better than we can: "He has a screen washer that he runs all the screens through, ensuring them actually being clean!!" The actually is doing the work in that sentence.

Why dirty screens undo clean glass

You can have flawless glass and still have a window that looks bad, and screens are usually why.

Light entering a room passes through the screen before it reaches the glass. A screen loaded with dust behaves like a filter - it scatters and dims the light, greys out the view, and dulls the whole room. People often describe the result as the window still looking dirty after a cleaning, when the glass is actually spotless and the screen in front of it is the problem.

Dirty screens also actively re-soil the glass you just paid to have cleaned. Dust held in the mesh washes down onto the pane in the first heavy dew or light rain, which is a frustrating way to lose a fresh clean.

There is an air-quality dimension too. A screen packed with dust is the filter your house breathes through every time you open a window for the evening cool-down - which in San Diego is most of the year.

The frame is hand-detailed separately

The machine cleans the mesh. It does not clean the frame, so we do that by hand afterward.

Screen frames are typically aluminium channel, and they collect a distinct kind of grime: oxidised aluminium residue, dirt packed into the corner joints, and the rubber spline that holds the mesh in place gathering its own line of buildup along the edge. It is fiddly, and it is why we treat it as its own step rather than assuming the wash covered it.

A cleaned mesh in a dirty frame is a half-done screen. Both parts get attention, which is what we mean by ensuring the entire screen is spotless.

Handling, damage, and what we will tell you

Screens come off, get cleaned, and go back on the window they came from. They are tracked through the process so that nothing gets swapped between openings - screens are rarely as interchangeable as they look, and a screen that is a quarter-inch off will not seat properly.

Sometimes a screen is already damaged before we touch it, and old screens can be brittle. Sun exposure over many San Diego summers makes both the mesh and the plastic spline fragile, and a frame that has been bent at some point in its life may not sit true when it goes back. If we find a screen with a tear, a failing spline, or a bent frame, we will show you and tell you. That is a much better conversation to have while we are there than for you to find it later.
