Is pole work safer than a ladder for two-storey windows?
Pole work from the ground is slower than a ladder, but on sloped and landscaped coastal lots it is the safer way to reach second-storey glass. It keeps ladder feet out of planting beds and off uneven soil. We run water-fed poles on two-storey homes in Point Loma and Pacific Beach.
A ladder needs flat, firm ground. Many coastal lots offer neither.
What we run into on the job
Point Loma is the clearest case. Houses on the slopes above the bay side, around La Playa and Fleetridge, sit on grades where one ladder foot is a foot or more lower than the other. On a Fleetridge job last month we measured about 18 inches of drop across the side yard, which is more than we will put a ladder on.
Pacific Beach has a different problem. Lots near Garnet Avenue and Crystal Pier are tight, with side yards as narrow as 4 feet, planted borders, and sometimes only a few feet between the house and the fence. We cleaned a two-storey place off Law Street where a ladder would have sat in a bed of succulents.
Neither is a place we want to stand a ladder.
How the pole method works
- We set up on the ground, on the driveway or walkway where possible.
- The water-fed brush on a pole, usually extended 20 to 30 feet, scrubs the exterior pane.
- Deionized water under 10 ppm rinses it, so the glass dries without spots and no squeegee is needed.
- We look at the pane from the ground and go back over anything that still shows film.
It takes longer than a ladder and a squeegee, often 20 to 30 extra minutes on a home with 12 to 15 upper windows. We think that is the right trade, and we say so at the quote.
What it costs
A typical two-storey exterior clean in these neighborhoods runs about $350 to $550 depending on pane count and access. Pole work does not add a surcharge on our jobs. We quote it as part of the price.
What it does not cover
Some glass is out of reach of a pole or needs access from inside. Large fixed windows over an entry may need a conversation with the homeowner about how and when we get at them from the inside.
Salt is the other thing to plan around. Coastal glass films faster than inland glass, so these homes usually want a visit every 2 to 3 months, compared with every 4 to 6 months for a house in Poway.
