Why does salt film build up so fast on La Jolla windows?
Ocean spray carries salt onto exterior glass, and the salt dries into a thin hazy film. Coastal La Jolla glass films faster than inland glass, so homes close to the water need a shorter cleaning interval. Deionized water and water-fed brushes lift the film without leaving mineral spots behind.
You can usually see it at a low angle in late afternoon. The pane looks clean straight on, then goes cloudy when the sun drops toward the water.

What the film actually is
It is dried sea salt mixed with fine dust and a little marine grime. It does not wipe off dry. Rubbing it with a dry cloth just drags the grit across the glass.
We work it loose with water-fed brushes first. Then the deionized rinse carries everything off the pane.
Ocean side or three blocks back: does it matter?
It matters a lot. A house on the ocean side of La Jolla Boulevard and a house behind the ridge are on different schedules, and we say so at the quote rather than selling everyone the same interval.
| Location | Main soiling | Interval |
|---|---|---|
| Ocean-facing, west of La Jolla Boulevard | Salt film, marine grime | Shorter |
| Inland, behind the ridge | Dust, seasonal pollen | Longer |
| Bay-facing slopes | Mixed salt and dust | In between |
Why we do not squeegee exteriors
Deionized water carries nothing dissolved in it. It dries without leaving mineral spots, so the exterior pane does not need a squeegee pass.
That matters on salt-heavy glass. A squeegee blade pulled across a gritty pane is how scratches start.
Tracks and screens on the same visit
Salt and grit collect in the sliding tracks, and that grit is what scratches glass over time. It is why we sell window track detailing as its own service. Screens hold dust that lands on freshly cleaned glass the first time the wind blows, so we do screens and glass together.
What about second-storey glass?
Many La Jolla homes sit on sloped, landscaped lots. We work upper glass from the ground with poles instead of setting a ladder in planted beds. It is slower. It also keeps the landscaping intact.
Matthew and Tanner do every job themselves, so the people who quote the glass are the people on the poles. See our La Jolla window cleaning page or the full exterior window cleaning service.
