What causes white spots low on Poway windows?

White spotting on the lower third of a Poway window is usually mineral residue from sprinkler overspray. Irrigation water dries on the glass and leaves its dissolved minerals behind. Unlike coastal salt film, it follows the sprinkler heads in arcs, and a quick wipe will not lift it.

We see it on almost every inland job. Last month we cleaned a 2,400 sq ft two-story on a Poway cul-de-sac where the front lawn heads sat about 3 feet from the glass. The bottom 30 inches of every ground-floor pane was covered in hard white dots. Rancho Peñasquitos, Scripps Ranch, and 4S Ranch deal with the same dust and hard-water overspray rather than salt.

Why does it keep coming back?

The sprinklers keep running. A front lawn on a timer that fires at 5 a.m. will mark the same windows again within two to three weeks.

On some Poway lots the heads sit a few feet from the glass. Those windows get hit every cycle, and the spots bake harder once afternoon temperatures pass 90F.

How do we clear it?

We use deionized water and water-fed brushes on the exterior glass. Deionized water carries nothing dissolved in it, so it dries without leaving new spots, and the brush loosens what is already baked on. We keep pressure low, well under 100 PSI, since high pressure can push water past aging seals.

Frames and sills matter too. Minerals collect in the corners where the glass meets the frame, and we detail those by hand.

Screens are the other piece. A dusty screen sheds onto freshly cleaned glass the first time the wind picks up, so we clean screens and glass in the same visit.

For pricing, a typical Poway single-story home with moderate overspray runs about $250 to $350 for exterior glass. Heavy, long-neglected mineral buildup can add $75 to $150 for extra detail work.

What can you do between cleanings?

  1. Check where your sprinkler heads point and adjust any that reach the glass.
  2. Keep an eye on the lowest panes, since they show spotting first.
  3. Do not scrub dry spots with abrasive pads. They scratch the glass.
  4. Clean the tracks, because grit there scratches glass over time.

Poway runs hot in late summer, and Santa Ana wind days in the fall push dust onto damp glass. Both make spotting set harder.

See our Poway window cleaning page or our exterior window cleaning service. And track detailing is its own service for a reason.
